Unknown Alphabet

This project was born from the need, desire, impatience and inexperience of creating my own font that I could use to communicate in my own way.

I have a huge respect for the world of typography and all of the professionals who have years of training, experience and learning behind them. That's why I decided to create my own alphabet, distancing myself from the graphic form of western calligraphy and creating my own language without offending or disrespecting a world that I find increasingly more interesting.

I was very clear about two things before starting this project:

1. I wanted to preserve the reading order of western calligraphy but without having to redesign all of its characters one by one.

2. The mass memorisation of the “letters” and complexity of learning the alphabet caused me distress. I chose to categorise, in small groups, all of the types of letters based on their native characteristics and apply three simple rules of repetitive action for reading them:

1 | ROTATION:

The main reading order in which a 90° rotation is applied to the entire piece or a rotation by the ends of the grid of a part of the piece.

2 | REFLEX:

Once the first rule it is not effective, the reflex is responsible for applying a new shape to the first piece so that the rotation can continue to apply. The reflex always starts from the first initial piece of the category.

3 | DUCPLICATION:

If the aforementioned two rules cannot be applied, doubling an existing part of the piece or space would come into play.

VOWELS

Fundamental base of communication, building bridges between consonants to provide meaning and solidity to words.

REPETITION OF CHARACTERS

Inspirational key of the first two rules of reading the alphabet. Applying these rules to a single letter, it acquires four different meanings.

ASCENDING

Group of characters where, because of their construction, their visual weight falls on top of the reticular.

DESCENDING

Grouping of characters where the visual weight of them falls at the bottom of the box.

CIRCULAR

Those characters built on a base of circular elements.

OBLIQUIES

The diagonal and oblique structures predominate in this group of characters.

NUMBERS

In this group the rules of reading, one and three, are added and result in a simultaneous application of both.

SPECIAL CHARACTERS

As this alphabet is intended for universal and fast communication for interfaces, punctuation has been limited to only four characters (the most commonly used). Use half of the grid as a visual reduction element, as well as the characters themselves.
